What is a CCJ?

Modified on Thu, 2 Apr at 12:02 PM

A County Court Judgment (CCJ) is a court order that confirms a company (or individual) owes a debt and must repay it. It usually follows when a creditor takes someone to court over unpaid invoices and either wins the case or the claim is not defended.

If a debt remains unpaid, a creditor can issue a county court claim to recover it. If the court decides the money is owed (for example because the claim is admitted or not defended), it can make a County Court Judgment (CCJ). Once issued, a CCJ is added to a public register and will normally appear on credit reports for up to six years.
