What is the difference between a registered address and a trading address?

Registered Address

The registered address is the legal address of a company as recorded with Companies House. This address:

  • Must be within the UK (England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland).
  • Is publicly visible on Companies House, allowing anyone to look up the company’s details.
  • Is where official communications, legal notices, and tax documents are sent.
  • Can be the address of a third party (such as an accountant) if the company prefers not to use its trading address.

Trading Address

The trading address is the location where the company carries out its regular business activities, such as:

  • Offices where employees work.
  • Shops or premises where goods are sold or services provided.
  • Warehouses or factories where goods are produced or stored.

Knowing the difference

These addresses might be different. For instance, a company could register with Companies House at an accountant’s office in London but have a trading address in Manchester where all operational activity happens.
